In most breeds, these colour variants have been known for many generations and are well understood by breed clubs and geneticists.
Where colours are excluded from a recognised breed standard, this is often because they are associated with undesirable genetic mutations, inherited health conditions, or because they indicate historical crossbreeding outside the recognised breed. In other cases, breeders may deliberately introduce genes from another breed to produce a fashionable colour that does not naturally occur within the breed’s accepted gene pool.

Responsible breeders focus on producing healthy, behaviourally stable dogs that meet the recognised breed standard, rather than chasing novelty or market trends.
For assistance animal work, the quality of the individual dog, comprehensive health screening and evidence of responsible breeding are far more important than whether the dog possesses an unusual or fashionable appearance.

The client also learned that colours outside the recognised breed standard are often excluded because of associated health concerns or because they reflect historical crossbreeding, not because they are newly discovered. After considering the evidence, the client shifted their focus towards finding a healthy, temperamentally suitable Labrador Retriever from health-tested parents rather than pursuing a specific coat colour.
Occupational therapists may encounter clients with strong preferences regarding an assistance animal’s appearance. While these preferences should be acknowledged respectfully, therapists should help clients understand that successful assistance animal partnerships are built on function, health, welfare and compatibility, not aesthetics.
Discussions should focus on the person’s occupational goals, environmental demands, support needs and the behavioural characteristics required to perform trained tasks safely and reliably. Appearance may be considered once these fundamental requirements have been met, but it should never outweigh evidence-informed selection or compromise animal welfare.
Ultimately, the most successful assistance animals are remembered not because of their colour, size or appearance, but because of the meaningful difference they make to the lives of the people they support.
