Module 3 – Consultation, Communication and Continuous Improvement

Effective workplace health and safety relies on collaboration, communication and shared responsibility. This module examines the importance of consultation with clients, families, employers, assistance animal trainers, veterinarians and multidisciplinary teams in identifying hazards, managing risks and improving workplace safety. Students will explore workplace health and safety documentation, record keeping and strategies for supporting continuous quality improvement through effective communication, stakeholder engagement and evidence-informed professional practice.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, learners will be able to:

1. Explain the importance of consultation and collaboration in maintaining workplace health and safety within assistance animal practice.
2. Describe the roles of workers, employers, clients, handlers and other stakeholders in WHS consultation processes.
3. Explain how effective communication supports hazard identification, risk management and safer workplace outcomes.
4. Identify appropriate methods for participating in WHS consultation, including meetings, feedback processes, reporting systems and collaborative discussions.
5. Apply communication strategies that support respectful, inclusive and effective WHS conversations within diverse assistance animal environments.
6. Explain the importance of worker participation in WHS decision-making and continuous improvement processes.
7. Identify opportunities for improving WHS systems, procedures and practices within assistance animal settings.
8. Apply continuous improvement principles to review workplace safety practices and identify potential improvements.
9. Explain the purpose and process of managing WHS improvement projects within assistance animal practice.
10. Develop strategies for implementing, monitoring and evaluating WHS improvements.
11. Explain the importance of accurate WHS documentation and record keeping in supporting safety, compliance and continuous improvement.
12. Identify the types of WHS records required within assistance animal practice, including hazard reports, incident records, consultation outcomes and improvement documentation.
