Understanding how animals learn is fundamental to ethical assistance animal practice. This module explores the scientific principles of learning theory and their practical application within assistance animal training. Students examine classical and operant conditioning, reinforcement strategies and evidence-based approaches to teaching new behaviours. The module also introduces the application of learning theory in assistance animal training, including marker training, shaping, generalisation and cooperative care. Emphasis is placed on humane, welfare-centred training methods that promote positive learning experiences and lifelong participation.
