Module 4 – Biosecurity, Outbreak Management and Public Health

This module examines infection prevention beyond the individual client by exploring biosecurity, public health, emerging infectious diseases, outbreak management, emergency preparedness and organisational resilience. Students consider how Occupational Therapists contribute to population health, emergency responses and sustainable healthcare through the One Health framework and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

1. Explain the principles of biosecurity, public health and One Health as they relate to occupational therapy practice.
2. Evaluate emerging infectious diseases, zoonotic risks and antimicrobial stewardship within contemporary healthcare.
3. Apply infection prevention principles during outbreaks, emergencies and disaster responses.
4. Support continuity of occupational therapy services during public health emergencies while maintaining safe practice.
5. Analyse the Occupational Therapist’s role in protecting population health through interdisciplinary collaboration and One Health-informed practice.
