Module 3 – Functional Assessment and Human–Animal Partnership Evaluation

A recommendation for an assistance animal must be based on a clear understanding of functional need, occupational impact and partnership suitability.

This module explores the process of functional assessment in assistance animal practice, including how occupational therapists identify disability-related barriers, analyse occupational performance and determine whether an assistance animal can realistically address identified needs.

Learners will examine the importance of assessing the human–animal partnership rather than evaluating the animal alone. Successful assistance animal outcomes depend on the interaction between the person, animal, environment and occupation.

The module also considers practical factors influencing sustainability, including the person’s capacity to care for the animal, available supports, environmental demands and the welfare needs of the animal.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, learners will be able to:

1. Analyse the relationship between impairment, activity limitation, participation restriction and assistance animal suitability.
2. Conduct functional reasoning regarding whether an assistance animal addresses disability-related occupational needs.
3. Evaluate human–animal partnership quality, including communication, relationship dynamics and functional fit.
4. Apply assessment principles within real-world environments rather than relying solely on clinic-based information.
5. Differentiate functional need from personal preference when considering assistance animal recommendations.
6. Critically evaluate capacity, supports and sustainability factors affecting long-term partnership success.
