Module 2 – Animal Body Systems and Common Health Conditions

A sound understanding of animal anatomy, physiology and common health conditions is fundamental for occupational therapists working alongside assistance animals. While occupational therapists are not expected to diagnose or treat veterinary conditions, they play an important role in recognising when an animal may be experiencing illness, injury or reduced function and ensuring timely referral to an appropriately qualified veterinary professional.

Assistance animals rely on optimal physical and psychological health to safely perform their roles. Many conditions affecting the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary, reproductive, nervous, endocrine and immune systems can influence an animal’s ability to work effectively, maintain stamina, perform trained tasks and participate safely in public environments. Some conditions develop gradually and may initially present as subtle changes in behaviour, mobility, endurance or willingness to work, making early recognition particularly important.

Occupational therapists frequently observe assistance animals during functional activities within the client’s everyday environments. This places them in a valuable position to identify changes that may indicate underlying health concerns, such as altered gait, reduced exercise tolerance, pain-related behaviours, weight changes, coughing, gastrointestinal disturbances or neurological abnormalities. Prompt recognition and referral can help prevent minor health issues from progressing to more serious conditions that may compromise both animal welfare and handler safety.

This module introduces the major body systems and explores how they contribute to normal health and function. It also examines common medical conditions encountered in assistance animals and discusses how these conditions may affect an animal’s wellbeing, occupational performance and capacity to safely undertake assistance work. Throughout the module, emphasis is placed on recognising early signs of disease, understanding the functional implications of illness and injury, and appreciating the importance of collaborative practice between occupational therapists, veterinarians and other animal health professionals.

Developing a foundational understanding of animal health enables occupational therapists to better support assistance animal teams, promote animal welfare, recognise when veterinary assessment is required and make informed decisions that protect both the handler and their animal partner.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the structure and function of the major body systems of companion animals commonly used as assistance animals.
  2. Explain how normal anatomy and physiology support an assistance animal’s health, wellbeing and working capacity.
  3. Recognise common diseases, disorders and medical conditions affecting each body system and identify early signs that warrant veterinary assessment.
  4. Identify how illness, injury and chronic disease may influence an assistance animal’s mobility, endurance, behaviour, task performance and overall occupational participation.
  5. Discuss the importance of preventative healthcare, routine monitoring and early intervention in maintaining the health and welfare of assistance animals.
  6. Differentiate between observations that fall within the occupational therapist’s scope of practice and those requiring referral to a veterinarian or other animal health professional.
  7. Apply knowledge of animal health to support safe, ethical and evidence-informed occupational therapy practice involving assistance animals.
  8. Recognise the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in promoting the long-term health, welfare and effectiveness of assistance animal teams.

These learning outcomes align well with AQF Level 9 expectations by moving beyond simple knowledge recall to emphasise critical observation, application to practice, professional reasoning, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
