Instead, it focuses on recognising common environmental hazards affecting assistance animals, understanding how occupational therapists can reduce risk through proactive planning, and reinforcing the importance of timely veterinary intervention when emergencies occur.
Environmental emergencies frequently develop rapidly and may have serious consequences for both the assistance animal and the handler. Occupational therapists should therefore incorporate environmental risk assessment into routine intervention planning and support handlers to make informed decisions that prioritise both safety and animal welfare.
Heat-related illness is one of the most common and potentially life-threatening environmental emergencies affecting working dogs. Unlike humans, dogs rely primarily on panting and limited sweating through their paw pads to regulate body temperature. During periods of high environmental temperature, humidity or physical exertion, these cooling mechanisms may become overwhelmed, resulting in progressive increases in body temperature.

During community activities, handlers should be encouraged to discourage scavenging behaviour and remain alert to baiting warnings issued by local councils or land management agencies.
Snake bites represent a significant environmental hazard in many parts of Australia, particularly during warmer months. Assistance animals working in rural, regional or bushland environments may encounter venomous snakes while accompanying their handlers.

Occupational therapists should encourage handlers to supervise animals closely around water, avoid hazardous conditions and ensure appropriate flotation equipment is available where boating or water-based activities are undertaken.
