The environments in which assistance animals live, work and travel have a profound influence on their behaviour, welfare and occupational performance. Likewise, the equipment they wear and use—including harnesses, leads, collars, vests and protective gear—can either facilitate comfort and participation or contribute to stress, discomfort and behavioural change. Contemporary animal welfare science recognises that behaviour is shaped not only by learning and reinforcement but also by the physical and social environments in which an animal operates. Consequently, appropriate environmental design and equipment selection are essential components of ethical assistance animal practice.

For assistance animals, the occupational environment is often highly complex. They are expected to navigate crowded public spaces, public transport, healthcare facilities, educational settings, workplaces and recreational environments while maintaining consistent behaviour and task performance. These settings frequently present competing sensory stimuli, unfamiliar people, changing surfaces and unpredictable events. An environment that is accessible and supportive for a human handler may not always meet the behavioural or welfare needs of the assistance animal. Occupational Therapists must therefore consider the needs of both members of the partnership when evaluating environmental accessibility and participation.

Similarly, equipment should support the animal’s function without compromising welfare. Poorly fitted harnesses, restrictive collars, inappropriate footwear or ill-designed equipment may contribute to pain, altered gait, behavioural avoidance and reduced task performance. Creating Behaviourally Supportive Environments

Behaviourally supportive environments encourage calm, confident and predictable behaviour.

Strategies include:

  • minimising unnecessary stressors
  • introducing novel environments gradually
  • supporting predictable transitions
  • allowing opportunities for decompression following demanding work.

Environmental modification often represents one of the least intrusive and most welfare-friendly methods of supporting behavioural success.

Balancing Public Access with Welfare

Assistance animals routinely accompany handlers into environments that would not ordinarily be experienced by companion animals.

While public access is essential for participation, practitioners should recognise that prolonged exposure to demanding environments may contribute to cumulative fatigue or stress.

Factors to consider include:

  • opportunities for toileting
  • access to drinking water

  • availability of quiet recovery spaces.

Within assistance animal practice, Occupational Therapists should be able to:

  • identify environmental factors influencing behaviour
  • recognise when equipment may affect comfort or task performance
  • consider the accessibility needs of both the handler and assistance animal
  • recommend environmental modifications that support participation and welfare
  • educate handlers regarding appropriate equipment use and maintenance

By considering both environmental accessibility and animal welfare, Occupational Therapists contribute to partnerships that are safe, sustainable and responsive to the needs of both members of the team.
