When selecting an assistance animal, the terms intelligence, trainability and biddability are often used interchangeably. Although related, they describe different characteristics, each contributing to an animal’s suitability for assistance work.
Intelligence refers to an animal’s ability to learn, solve problems and adapt to new situations. Intelligent animals are often quick learners and capable of applying previous experiences to unfamiliar circumstances. However, intelligence alone does not predict success as an assistance animal.
Trainability describes an animal’s capacity to learn and reliably perform behaviours through training. Trainability is influenced by intelligence, motivation, health, learning history and reinforcement, but also by the animal’s ability to generalise behaviours across different environments. Highly trainable animals learn efficiently, retain skills over time and consistently perform trained tasks when required.
Biddability refers to an animal’s natural willingness to cooperate with and respond to a human handler. Highly biddable animals enjoy working in partnership with people, readily seek guidance and maintain engagement during training and daily work. Importantly, biddability is not the same as blind obedience. Assistance animals must also demonstrate appropriate confidence and independent judgement when circumstances require it. For example, guide dogs are trained to use intelligent disobedience by refusing commands that would place their handler in danger, while medical alert and seizure response animals may interrupt or override a handler’s actions to perform life-saving alerts or responses.
These characteristics interact but do not always occur together. An animal may be highly intelligent but prefer to work independently, making it less suited to assistance work despite learning tasks quickly. Conversely, an animal with average problem-solving ability but excellent trainability and strong biddability may become an outstanding assistance animal because it consistently works cooperatively with its handler.
Although some breeds have been selectively developed for close cooperation with humans, considerable variation exists between individual animals. Prospect selection should therefore focus on assessing the individual rather than assuming these characteristics based solely on breed.

Successful assistance animals typically demonstrate an appropriate balance of all three characteristics. Selection should therefore consider not only how quickly an animal learns, but also how reliably it applies its learning and how willingly it works alongside its handler throughout its career.
A trainer assessed two assistance dog prospects with similar health, temperament and training histories. Both dogs learned new tasks quickly and demonstrated excellent obedience during formal assessments. However, one dog frequently chose to investigate the environment rather than remain engaged with its handler and often preferred making independent decisions during problem-solving activities. The second dog consistently checked in with its handler, readily accepted guidance and maintained focus despite environmental distractions while still demonstrating sufficient confidence to work independently when required. Although both dogs were intelligent and trainable, the trainer determined that the second dog displayed stronger biddability and was therefore more suitable for assistance work. This example illustrates that intelligence alone does not predict success; assistance animals require an appropriate balance of intelligence, trainability and willingness to work cooperatively with their handler.
Occupational therapists should recognise that an assistance animal’s success depends on more than intelligence or obedience. Understanding the differences between intelligence, trainability and biddability enables OTs to interpret behavioural assessments more accurately, contribute meaningfully to interdisciplinary discussions and develop realistic expectations regarding an individual animal’s capabilities. Appreciating these distinctions also assists OTs to explain prospect selection decisions to clients and families, reinforcing that the most suitable assistance animal is not necessarily the smartest animal, but the one whose characteristics best support a safe, reliable and enduring partnership.
