Understanding Hybrid Vigour

It is commonly claimed that deliberately crossing two different breeds will automatically produce healthier offspring through hybrid vigour, also known as heterosis. While hybrid vigour is a recognised genetic phenomenon, it is frequently misunderstood and is often used as a marketing term rather than being supported by evidence.

True hybrid vigour occurs when genetically diverse populations are crossed, reducing the likelihood that offspring inherit two copies of harmful recessive genes. However, this benefit is not guaranteed simply because two different breeds are mated.

If both parent breeds carry the same inherited disorder or similar genetic predispositions, their offspring may inherit those conditions regardless of being crossbred. Likewise, if breeders fail to undertake appropriate health screening, crossing breeds offers little or no protection against inherited disease.

For example, Labrador Retrievers and Poodles are both predisposed to conditions including:

  • hip dysplasia
  • elbow dysplasia
  • progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)
  • exercise-induced collapse (EIC)
  • inherited eye disorders
  • certain autoimmune and orthopaedic conditions.

Consequently, breeding these two breeds together does not eliminate these risks. Instead, offspring may inherit genetic conditions from either or both parent breeds.

Similarly, crossing two brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds will not improve breathing simply because they are mixed breeds. Crossing two breeds predisposed to patellar luxation, epilepsy, cardiac disease or other inherited conditions may likewise perpetuate or even increase these risks.

Health is determined by the genetics of the individual parents and the health testing undertaken—not simply by whether the dog is purebred or crossbred.

Prospective handlers should therefore avoid assuming that a crossbred dog is automatically healthier than a purebred dog. Well-bred purebred dogs from health-tested parents may have significantly lower health risks than poorly bred crossbreeds, while carefully planned crossbreeding programs may also produce healthy dogs when supported by evidence-based breeding practices.

Designer Dogs and Marketing Claims

The popularity of so-called designer dogs has increased substantially in recent decades. These are deliberate crosses between two recognised breeds and are frequently marketed using combined breed names, particularly those ending in “-oodle”.

Examples include:

  • Labradoodle
  • Groodle (Goldendoodle)
  • Cavoodle (Cavapoo)
  • Moodle (Maltipoo)
  • Spoodle (Cockapoo)
  • Bernedoodle
  • Bordoodle
  • Schnoodle
  • Sheepadoodle.

While many of these dogs make wonderful companions and some have become successful working animals, the name itself provides no assurance regarding health, temperament or suitability for work.

Designer crossbreeds remain genetically variable. Puppies from the same litter may differ substantially in:

  • size
  • coat type
  • shedding
  • grooming requirements
  • temperament
  • energy levels
  • trainability
  • working drive
  • inherited disease risk.

Claims that a particular cross will consistently produce a dog with the “best traits of both breeds” are overly simplistic and are not supported by genetics. Offspring inherit a random combination of genes from each parent and may express characteristics from either breed or an unpredictable mixture of both.

Similarly, no breeder can guarantee that all puppies within a litter will be non-shedding, hypoallergenic, calm, highly trainable or ideally suited to assistance work.

Each individual dog must be assessed on its own merits.

The “Hypoallergenic” Myth

Dogs are frequently marketed as hypoallergenic, particularly Poodles and many Poodle crosses.

Scientific evidence does not support the existence of a truly hypoallergenic dog breed.

Most allergic reactions are triggered by proteins found in saliva, dander and urine rather than the hair itself. Although some breeds shed less hair than others, all dogs produce these proteins to varying degrees.

Individual people also vary considerably in the specific allergens to which they react. Consequently, one person may tolerate a particular dog well while another experiences significant allergic symptoms despite the dog being advertised as hypoallergenic.

Prospective handlers with allergies should therefore spend considerable time interacting with an individual dog before making any commitment rather than relying on breed reputation or marketing claims.

“Teacup”, “Pocket” and “Micro” Dogs

Terms such as teacup, micro, miniature, pocket and similar descriptions are frequently used as marketing terms rather than recognised breed classifications.

Most recognised breeds do not include a “teacup” variety within their official breed standards.

Extremely small dogs are often produced by selectively breeding exceptionally small individuals, including the smallest puppies within litters (commonly referred to as runts), or by selecting for genetic mutations associated with reduced body size. While not every small dog has health problems, breeding solely to achieve extremely small size may increase the risk of numerous welfare concerns.

Potential health problems include:

  • fragile bones
  • delayed closure of the skull (persistent fontanelle)
  • hydrocephalus
  • dental overcrowding
  • hypoglycaemia
  • tracheal collapse
  • patellar luxation
  • congenital heart disease
  • reproductive complications
  • shortened lifespan.

Extremely small body size also reduces the physical capability required for many forms of working animal roles and may increase susceptibility to accidental injury.

Working animal selection should therefore prioritise functional soundness and long-term welfare over achieving novelty or exceptionally small size.

“Rare”, “Designer” and “Exclusive”

Prospective handlers should be cautious whenever breeders promote animals primarily using terms such as:

  • rare
  • exotic
  • exclusive
  • designer
  • premium
  • luxury
  • unique
  • one-of-a-kind.

These descriptions are marketing terms rather than indicators of health or quality.

Responsible breeders generally focus on:

  • health
  • temperament
  • structure
  • longevity
  • working ability
  • welfare
  • preservation of the breed.

Marketing based primarily upon rarity or appearance should encourage prospective purchasers to ask additional questions regarding health testing, temperament assessment and breeding objectives.

The goal of ethical breeding is not to produce the most unusual-looking animal, but rather to produce healthy, physically sound animals capable of living long, fulfilling lives.

Coat Colours and “Rare” Colour Marketing

Coat colour has very little influence on a dog’s ability to perform as a working animal. Nevertheless, unusual coat colours have become increasingly popular and are frequently marketed at substantially higher prices.

Prospective handlers should approach claims regarding “rare” colours with caution.

Breed standards have generally evolved over many decades to preserve the historical appearance, function and welfare of each breed. While not every colour excluded from a breed standard is associated with disease, many non-standard colours have been investigated previously and excluded because they are linked with undesirable genetic consequences, reduced pigmentation or inherited health conditions. Others are excluded because they are inconsistent with the historical development and purpose of the breed.

Consequently, the absence of a particular colour from a recognised breed standard should not automatically be viewed as evidence that the breed standard is outdated. In many cases, the colour has already been identified and intentionally excluded to protect the health, welfare or integrity of the breed.

Examples of colour-associated health concerns include:

  • Double merle, associated with a greatly increased risk of congenital deafness, blindness and significant ocular abnormalities.
  • Extreme white spotting in some breeds, which may increase the risk of congenital deafness.
  • Colour dilution alopecia, associated with dilute coat colours in susceptible breeds.
  • Albinism and severe pigment deficiencies, which may result in photosensitivity, vision impairment, skin disease and an increased risk of skin cancers.

The increasing demand for unusual colours has unfortunately encouraged some breeders to prioritise cosmetic traits over health, temperament and genetic diversity. Selecting breeding animals primarily for colour may inadvertently increase inbreeding or perpetuate inherited disease if health and temperament are not given equal priority.

For working animals, cosmetic characteristics should always be considered secondary to sound genetics, structural health, temperament, trainability and welfare.
