Module 1 – Foundations of Animal Behaviour and Welfare

This module introduces the scientific foundations of animal behaviour and welfare relevant to occupational therapy assistance animal practice. Students examine ethology, domestication, animal cognition, communication, welfare science, ethics and contemporary welfare assessment frameworks. The module explores how behaviour, physical health, emotional state and environmental factors interact to influence welfare and provides the theoretical foundation for evidence-based assessment and management throughout the remainder of the unit.

Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

1. Explain the scientific principles underpinning animal behaviour and welfare.
2. Describe the biological, environmental and social factors that influence animal behaviour.
3. Explain contemporary animal welfare science and ethical frameworks relevant to assistance animals.
4. Evaluate animal welfare using recognised welfare assessment frameworks.
5. Describe the relationship between emotions, cognition, stress and behaviour.
6. Explain the principles of One Welfare and their application to assistance animal partnerships.
