Before beginning the specialist assistance-animal content within AAOT, we want to spend some time considering how you will learn.
Occupational Therapists entering AAOT come from very different educational and professional backgrounds.
Some participants may have graduated recently. Others may have been practising for many years and may not have undertaken formal academic study for some time. Some may be experienced postgraduate students or researchers, while others may be encountering postgraduate-style learning and assessment for the first time.
Participants also bring different:
There is therefore no expectation that everyone should learn in the same way.
This topic provides a practical toolkit that you can draw upon throughout AAOT. Use what helps you, adapt what needs adapting and return to this section whenever you need it.
AAOT is not designed around memorising a large collection of facts about assistance animals.
Professional assistance-animal practice requires practitioners to integrate knowledge from areas including:
No practitioner can memorise everything they may eventually need across all of these areas.
Advanced professional practice therefore requires you to continually recognise:
What do I know?
What don’t I know?
How reliable is what I think I know?
Where can I find the information I need?
How do I evaluate it?
How does it apply to this particular person, animal, occupation and environment?
Is this within my professional scope and individual competence?
Who else should be involved?
These questions will recur throughout AAOT and throughout professional practice.
Learning how to learn is therefore not separate from professional competence. It is part of becoming a practitioner capable of responding safely and thoughtfully to situations that no course could completely anticipate.
You are not beginning professional education again from the beginning.
As an Occupational Therapist, you already bring foundations in areas such as:
Your professional experience may also have developed considerable expertise in particular populations, settings or areas of practice.
AAOT asks you to extend, challenge and integrate that existing expertise into assistance-animal practice.
Sometimes you will encounter information that is entirely new.
At other times, a new concept may provide another way of understanding something you have already encountered professionally.
As you progress, ask:
Where does this fit with what I already know?
Does this support, extend or challenge my existing understanding?
How might this alter my professional reasoning or practice?
Effective learning begins before you start reading.
Consider what environment allows you to participate most effectively.
Depending upon your individual needs, this might involve adjusting:
Your learning environment does not need to look like somebody else’s.
The environment that works for reading a journal article may also be different from the one that works for watching a presentation, participating in professional discussion or preparing an assessment.
Ask:
What helps me engage with this particular learning task effectively?
Large tasks can become cognitively overwhelming when represented as a single instruction.
Instead of:

For a substantial assessment, you might work backwards:

“Write the assessment” is not a small action.
“Read the assessment instructions and identify what I am being asked to do” is.
Not everything needs to be memorised equally.
A useful way of thinking about information is:
Foundational information you should readily understand and be able to apply.
Important information you should understand and know how to locate reliably when required.
Information that extends or enriches your professional knowledge.
These categories are not fixed.
Something that initially appears merely interesting may become essential when you encounter a particular client, animal, environment or professional problem.
Professional competence does not mean knowing every fact.
It includes knowing what you know, recognising what you do not know, and knowing how to find reliable information when you need it.
There is no single correct way to learn.
Experiment with different strategies and retain those that genuinely help you understand, retrieve, integrate and apply information.
After engaging with material, put it aside and ask:
Then return to the material and check.
The purpose is not to prove that you remembered everything.
What you could not retrieve helps identify what requires further attention.
Revisit important information over time rather than encountering it once and assuming it has been permanently learned.
For example:

The exact timetable is less important than the principle.
Try explaining a concept as though you were teaching someone unfamiliar with the subject.
If your explanation becomes vague, circular or uncertain at a particular point, you may have identified a gap in your own understanding.
This is particularly useful for complex concepts that initially appear straightforward.
Without looking at your notes, write, draw or map everything you remember about a topic.
Then compare it with the source material and identify:

The purpose is not to create polished notes. It is to identify what has and has not been retained.
Professional cases rarely arrive neatly divided into academic subjects.
A single assistance-animal case might simultaneously involve occupational performance, behaviour, welfare, law, ethics, health, safeguarding and risk.
Alternating between related areas can therefore help you practise identifying which knowledge applies, when and why.
Some learners benefit from periods of focused work separated by planned breaks.
A commonly known example is the Pomodoro approach of approximately 25 minutes of work followed by a short break, but there is nothing compulsory about that interval.
Use:

in a pattern that works for you.
When beginning feels difficult, commit to one very small action.

Starting can reduce the cognitive demand associated with approaching a much larger task.
Useful learning tools may include:
The objective is not to create attractive notes.
The objective is to create structures that improve understanding, retrieval and application.
A decision tree that helps you recognise when another professional should be consulted may ultimately be more useful in practice than several pages of copied notes.
Do not rely entirely upon memory to manage a substantial credential.
Use external systems where they help, including:
Where possible, consider:
One task → One goal → One period of focused attention
If another task comes to mind while you are working, record it somewhere rather than immediately abandoning your current task.
Your brain does not simultaneously need to function as your learner, calendar, filing cabinet, reminder system and task manager.
More time spent studying does not automatically mean more learning.
Breaks, sleep and recovery contribute to learning and memory.
If you are repeatedly reading the same paragraph without processing it, continuing indefinitely may be less productive than taking a break and returning later.
Professional education should not reward unnecessary exhaustion.
The objective is meaningful learning and professional development, not demonstrating how long you can remain at a desk.
Using legitimate accessibility supports is not cheating.
Depending upon individual needs, participants may use appropriate tools such as:
Adapt the learning strategy to the learner rather than assuming that every learner must access information in the same way.

Metacognition means thinking about your own thinking and learning.
Periodically ask yourself:
Do not continue using a learning technique simply because somebody else says it is effective.
Use and adapt strategies according to what genuinely helps you learn.
This reflective process is closely related to professional reasoning.
An AAOT practitioner must be able to distinguish between:
I know this.
I think I know this, but I should verify it.
I don’t know this.
This requires expertise outside my professional scope or individual competence.
Those distinctions matter.
AAOT assessments use instruction words such as describe, explain, apply, analyse, evaluate, justify and synthesise.
These words indicate the type and depth of thinking expected.
For example:
Identify → What is it?
Describe → What is it like?
Explain → How or why does it happen?
Apply → How does this knowledge work in this situation?
Analyse → What are the important components and relationships?
Evaluate → How strong, appropriate, effective or defensible is it?
Justify → Why is this conclusion or decision supported?
Synthesise → What understanding emerges when different evidence, concepts or perspectives are integrated?
Before beginning an assessment, identify the important instruction words and ask:
What am I actually being asked to demonstrate?

AAOT is designed to progressively move beyond remembering information toward applying, analysing, evaluating and integrating it.
One useful framework for thinking about this is the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy:

These should not be treated as rigid steps.
Rather, they illustrate increasing cognitive complexity.
For example:
Remember: identify relevant legislation.
Understand: explain why animal welfare is relevant to assistance-animal practice.
Apply: apply a welfare framework to an assistance-animal scenario.
Analyse: examine interactions between the handler, animal, occupation and environment.
Evaluate: critically evaluate the suitability of a proposed assistance-animal intervention.
Create: develop a professional resource, assessment framework, risk-management plan, research proposal or other original professional work.
Throughout AAOT, ask yourself whether you are simply remembering information or whether you can use it.
Do not aim to memorise every resource you encounter.
Instead, build systems that allow you to find reliable information when you need it.
Your professional resource library might include:
You might organise these through reference-management software, cloud folders, bookmarks, databases, note-taking software, physical folders or another system that works for you.
The particular system matters less than whether you can retrieve and use the information when required.
The goal is not:
Know every fact.
The goal is:
Know what you know, recognise what you do not know, and know how to find reliable information when needed.

Feedback is part of learning.
When you receive feedback, consider:
Read → Reflect → Identify strengths → Identify areas for development → Choose actions → Apply
Ask:
Keep useful feedback available when completing later work.
AAOT should demonstrate development over time rather than simply produce a series of disconnected submissions.
As you progress through AAOT, revisit your earlier assumptions.
Ask:
What did I think before?
What do I think now?
What changed my thinking?
What evidence influenced me?
What am I now less certain about?
What new questions do I have?
Becoming less certain can sometimes reflect deeper learning.
As knowledge develops, complexities that once appeared simple often become more visible.
For example, a question that initially appears to be:
Would an assistance dog help this person?
may eventually become:
What occupational need are we addressing? What evidence supports this intervention? Is this particular animal suitable? Can the animal’s welfare needs be sustainably met? What risks exist? What alternatives are available? What does the person want? What are the environmental implications? Which other professionals need to contribute?
The second question is less simple.
It is also considerably more professionally useful.
Meeting assessment and competency requirements is necessary, but it should not be the only objective.
Aim to develop the ability to:
Find → Understand → Critically Appraise → Integrate → Apply → Analyse → Evaluate → Justify
Ask yourself:
Could I explain this?
Could I apply it to an unfamiliar situation?
Could I critically evaluate the evidence?
Could I identify its limitations?
Could I recognise when the evidence is insufficient?
Could I identify when something is outside my individual competence?
Could I identify who else should be involved?
Could I defend my professional reasoning?
And ultimately:
Could I use what I have learned to make a safe, ethical, evidence-informed and professionally defensible decision involving an assistance-animal team?
That is the level of learning toward which AAOT is directed.
You now have a practical toolkit for approaching the learning that occurs throughout AAOT.
You do not need to master or use every strategy in this topic before continuing.
