Spotlight on Neurodivergence and Assistance Dogs: Supporting Diverse Cognitive, Sensory and Functional Needs

Neurodivergence describes natural variations in how individuals think, learn, communicate, process information, regulate emotions and interact with their environments. The concept recognises that human brains vary, and that these differences may influence a person’s experiences, strengths, challenges and support needs.

Within contemporary disability and occupational therapy practice, neurodivergence is understood through both a strengths-based and functional lens. Neurodivergent individuals may experience unique abilities and perspectives while also encountering barriers within environments that are not designed to accommodate different ways of processing information, communicating or engaging.

Assistance dogs may support some neurodivergent individuals where there is a clear functional need and where trained tasks contribute to meaningful outcomes. However, neurodivergence itself does not automatically indicate that an assistance dog is appropriate. As with all assistance animal recommendations, assessment must focus on the individual person, their occupational goals, environmental barriers and whether the partnership provides sustainable benefit.

The relevant question is not:

“Does this person have a neurodevelopmental diagnosis?”

but:

“Would an appropriately selected and trained assistance dog reduce disability-related barriers and support this person’s meaningful participation, independence and quality of life?”

Understanding Neurodivergence in Assistance Animal Practice

Neurodivergence encompasses a range of neurological and developmental differences. While autism is one of the most recognised forms of neurodivergence, it represents only one part of a much broader population.

Neurodivergent individuals may experience differences in areas including:

  • sensory processing;
  • attention and executive functioning;
  • communication;
  • emotional regulation;
  • movement;
  • learning;
  • social interaction;
  • perception and interpretation of information.

These differences may influence participation in areas such as:

  • education;
  • employment;
  • relationships;
  • self-care;
  • community access;
  • independent living.

However, diagnosis alone does not predict support needs. Two people with the same neurodevelopmental diagnosis may have very different strengths, challenges and occupational goals.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism is one example of neurodivergence and is characterised by differences in communication, sensory processing, social interaction, attention, movement and patterns of behaviour.

Some autistic individuals may experience disability-related barriers involving:

  • sensory overload;
  • transitions;
  • communication access;
  • safety;
  • emotional regulation;
  • participation in community environments.

An assistance dog may support some autistic individuals through specific trained tasks, but it should not be viewed as a treatment for autism or a method of changing autistic characteristics.

The role of the assistance dog should be based on individual goals, such as supporting independence, participation, safety or access to meaningful activities.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental difference associated with differences in attention regulation, impulse control, activity regulation and executive functioning.

Some individuals with ADHD experience functional barriers related to:

  • organisation;
  • planning;
  • maintaining routines;
  • time management;
  • transitions;
  • emotional regulation;
  • task completion.

In some circumstances, an assistance dog may support an individual through structured routines, environmental prompts or participation-related goals. However, the dog does not replace executive functioning strategies, medication where appropriate, environmental supports or skill development.

Assessment must consider whether the assistance dog provides meaningful additional support beyond existing strategies.

Tourette Syndrome

Tourette Syndrome is a neurological condition characterised by motor and vocal tics. The presentation varies significantly between individuals, and not all people with Tourette Syndrome experience disability or require support.

For some individuals, tics may create barriers related to:

  • social participation;
  • education;
  • employment;
  • fatigue;
  • emotional wellbeing;
  • community access.

Assistance dogs may support some individuals with Tourette Syndrome through trained tasks designed around functional goals.

Potential roles may include:

  • providing interruption or redirection where appropriate;
  • supporting routines;
  • assisting with emotional regulation strategies;
  • increasing confidence in public environments.

However, it is important that professionals avoid assuming that an assistance dog should suppress or eliminate tics. The goal is not to remove neurodivergent behaviours but to support the individual’s participation and quality of life.

Dyslexia and Specific Learning Differences

Dyslexia and related learning differences affect how individuals process written language and information. While often associated with education, these differences may influence broader occupational participation, including employment, communication and self-advocacy.

An assistance dog would not directly address literacy difficulties. However, in some circumstances, an animal partnership may support broader functional goals such as confidence, routine development, emotional regulation or participation in environments that create barriers.

The focus must remain on the actual functional impact experienced by the individual rather than the diagnosis itself.

Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) and Dyspraxia

Developmental Coordination Disorder involves differences in motor coordination, planning and execution of movements.

Individuals may experience challenges with:

  • daily activities;
  • organisation of movement;
  • physical participation;
  • independence.

Assistance dogs may support some individuals where tasks can be appropriately designed around functional needs, such as retrieving items, supporting routines or assisting participation.

However, tasks involving physical assistance must always consider the animal’s size, structure, health and welfare.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

OCD is a mental health condition involving intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviours or compulsions that may significantly affect daily functioning.

Some individuals may experience barriers related to:

  • completing routines;
  • leaving home;
  • managing anxiety;
  • participating in community activities.

Psychiatric assistance dogs may support some individuals through trained behaviours related to functional goals. However, the dog should not reinforce compulsive behaviours or become part of an unhealthy dependency pattern.

Assessment requires careful consideration of whether the partnership supports increased independence and participation.

Sensory Processing Differences Across Neurodivergence

Many neurodivergent individuals experience differences in sensory processing. These differences may influence how individuals respond to:

  • sound;
  • light;
  • touch;
  • movement;
  • crowds;
  • environmental unpredictability.

An assistance dog may support some people through predictable routines, trained tasks and increased confidence within environments.

However, sensory support must not be confused with simply providing comfort. A professional recommendation requires identification of:

  • the functional barrier;
  • the trained task;
  • expected outcomes;
  • ongoing sustainability.

Trauma, Neurodivergence and Overlapping Presentations

Some neurodivergent individuals may also experience trauma histories, anxiety, depression or other mental health conditions. While these conditions are not themselves forms of neurodivergence, they may interact with neurodevelopmental differences and influence occupational participation.

Assistance dogs may support some individuals with overlapping needs through psychiatric assistance tasks; however, assessment must carefully distinguish between:

  • emotional comfort;
  • companionship;
  • therapeutic support;
  • disability-related trained assistance.

An assistance dog should enhance autonomy and participation rather than create reliance that limits independence.

Neuroaffirming Assistance Dog Practice

A neuroaffirming approach recognises that neurodivergent individuals should not be viewed as needing to be “fixed” or made more typical.

The role of an assistance dog is not to eliminate neurodivergent traits, behaviours or communication styles. Instead, the purpose is to reduce barriers created by the interaction between the person and their environment.

Effective assistance dog practice considers:

  • the individual’s strengths;
  • communication preferences;
  • sensory needs;
  • personal goals;
  • autonomy;
  • environmental context;
  • animal welfare.

The person should remain the expert in their own experience, and the assistance dog should be considered only where it contributes meaningful benefit.

Occupational Therapy Considerations

For occupational therapists, neurodivergent assistance dog assessment requires moving beyond diagnosis-based thinking and applying occupation-focused reasoning.

Assessment should explore:

  • What activities or roles are difficult to access?
  • What environmental barriers exist?
  • What strategies are currently effective?
  • What does the person want to achieve?
  • Would an assistance dog provide additional functional benefit?
  • Is the partnership sustainable for both the person and the animal?

The goal is not to determine whether a diagnosis qualifies someone for an assistance dog. The goal is to determine whether this specific human–animal partnership is an appropriate, ethical and effective intervention.

Key Practice Principle

Neurodivergence is diverse. Autism is one example, but assistance dog practice must recognise the broader range of neurodevelopmental differences that may influence participation.

A successful neurodivergent assistance dog partnership is based on:

  • individual assessment;
  • functional need;
  • informed choice;
  • appropriate task design;
  • realistic expectations;
  • respect for neurodivergent identity;
  • protection of animal welfare.

The purpose of an assistance dog is not to change the person. It is to support the person to participate, communicate, regulate and engage in life in ways that are meaningful to them.
