Spotlight on Biddability: More Than Just Obedience

Biddability refers to an animal’s natural willingness to cooperate with, respond to and work alongside a human handler. It is one of the most important characteristics considered during assistance animal selection because successful assistance animals must not only learn complex tasks but also consistently choose to work in partnership with their handler across a wide range of environments.

Biddability is often misunderstood as intelligence or obedience. While these characteristics are related, they are not the same. An intelligent animal may quickly learn new behaviours but may also be highly independent and prefer to make its own decisions. Likewise, an obedient animal may reliably follow trained cues yet struggle to adapt when faced with unfamiliar situations. Biddability describes an animal’s intrinsic motivation to engage with its handler, seek guidance and maintain cooperation while still demonstrating appropriate confidence and initiative.

Assistance animals require a careful balance between independence and responsiveness. For example, guide dogs are specifically trained to exercise intelligent disobedience by refusing a command that would place their handler in danger. Similarly, medical alert and seizure response animals may need to interrupt or ignore a handler’s actions to perform an alert or response behaviour. These examples demonstrate that highly biddable animals are not blindly obedient; rather, they work collaboratively with their handler while applying their training appropriately to the situation.

Biddability exists on a continuum and is influenced by genetics, early socialisation, previous experiences, health and training. Although some breeds have been selectively developed for close cooperation with humans, considerable variation exists between individual animals. Selection should therefore focus on the characteristics of the individual rather than relying solely on breed-based expectations.

Animals with very low biddability may struggle to remain engaged with their handler, become easily distracted by environmental stimuli or prefer to work independently. Conversely, animals that become excessively dependent on continual direction or reassurance may find it difficult to demonstrate the confidence and initiative required in many assistance roles. The ideal prospect demonstrates an appropriate balance of attentiveness, confidence, adaptability and willingness to work as part of a team.

Practice Example

A trainer assessed two assistance dog prospects with similar health, temperament and training histories. Both dogs learned new tasks quickly and demonstrated excellent obedience during formal assessments. However, one dog frequently chose to investigate the environment rather than remain engaged with its handler and often preferred making independent decisions during problem-solving activities. The second dog consistently checked in with its handler, readily accepted guidance and maintained focus despite environmental distractions while still demonstrating sufficient confidence to work independently when required. Although both dogs were intelligent and trainable, the trainer determined that the second dog displayed stronger biddability and was therefore more suitable for assistance work. This example illustrates that intelligence alone does not predict success; the willingness to work cooperatively with a handler is equally important.

Occupational Therapy Considerations

Occupational therapists should understand that biddability influences how effectively an assistance animal can support occupational participation over the long term. A highly biddable animal is more likely to remain engaged with the handler, adapt to changing routines and respond consistently to functional needs in a variety of environments. Recognising the difference between intelligence, obedience and biddability enables OTs to participate more effectively in interdisciplinary discussions regarding prospect selection and matching, while maintaining realistic expectations about an individual animal’s capabilities and long-term suitability.
