Behavioural observation is the foundation of behavioural assessment and evidence-based clinical decision-making. Before practitioners can identify welfare concerns, interpret behavioural changes or develop appropriate intervention plans, they must first be able to accurately observe, record and describe behaviour. Objective behavioural observation provides the evidence upon which subsequent assessment, diagnosis, referral and intervention are based. Without accurate observation, even the most comprehensive assessment tools may produce misleading conclusions.

Animals communicate continuously through their behaviour. Posture, movement, facial expression, body language, vocalisations and interactions with people, other animals and the environment all provide valuable information about an animal’s physical health, emotional state, motivation and welfare. However, behaviour does not occur in isolation. Every behaviour is influenced by a complex interaction of genetics, learning history, health, emotional wellbeing, environmental conditions and social context. Effective behavioural observation therefore requires practitioners to consider not only what behaviour occurs, but also when, where and under what circumstances it occurs.

A common challenge in behavioural assessment is the tendency to interpret behaviour through a human perspective. Anthropomorphism, or attributing human thoughts, emotions or motivations to animals, may lead to inaccurate conclusions and inappropriate interventions. Contemporary behavioural science instead emphasises objective observation using measurable, observable behaviours rather than assumptions regarding an animal’s intentions or emotional experiences. Although emotional states can often be inferred from behaviour, these inferences should be supported by multiple sources of evidence rather than subjective judgement alone.

For Occupational Therapists, behavioural observation extends beyond identifying training issues. Behaviour frequently provides the earliest indication of pain, illness, stress, fatigue, cognitive decline or compromised welfare. Observations made during occupational therapy assessment and intervention may therefore contribute valuable information to interdisciplinary decision-making, particularly when combined with veterinary assessment, behavioural evaluation and information provided by handlers.

This chapter introduces systematic approaches to behavioural observation and recording. Students will examine objective observation techniques, methods for recording behaviour, common sources of observer bias and strategies for collecting reliable behavioural information that supports evidence-based occupational therapy practice.

Why Behavioural Observation Matters

Behavioural observation is one of the most valuable assessment tools available to professionals working with assistance animals.

Accurate observation allows practitioners to:

  • identify changes in behaviour over time
  • recognise early indicators of illness or injury
  • evaluate welfare
  • assess learning and task performance
  • monitor behavioural responses to intervention
  • identify environmental influences
  • support interdisciplinary communication
  • contribute to evidence-based clinical reasoning.

Because behavioural changes often occur before obvious physical signs of disease, routine observation plays an important role in preventative healthcare and welfare monitoring.

Behaviour as Clinical Information

Every behaviour provides information.

Rather than asking whether behaviour is “good” or “bad,” practitioners should ask:

  • What behaviour occurred?
  • Under what circumstances did it occur?
  • What happened immediately beforehand?
  • What happened immediately afterwards?
  • Has this behaviour changed over time?
  • Does the behaviour appear typical for this individual?

Behaviour should be viewed as clinical data rather than as evidence of personality or intent.

For example, reluctance to perform a familiar assistance task may reflect:

  • pain
  • fatigue
  • confusion
  • equipment discomfort
  • environmental stress
  • changes in reinforcement history
  • declining welfare.

Objective observation allows practitioners to explore these possibilities systematically rather than making assumptions.

Objective Versus Subjective Observation

A fundamental principle of behavioural assessment is distinguishing objective observations from subjective interpretations.

Objective Observation

Objective observations describe behaviours that can be directly seen, heard or measured.

Examples include:

  • tail held low during interaction
  • repeated lip licking
  • yawned six times within five minutes
  • refused three food rewards
  • stood behind the handler during greeting
  • remained lying down for ten minutes.

Objective observations can be verified by another observer.

Subjective Interpretation

Subjective statements describe assumptions about an animal’s thoughts, intentions or emotions.

Examples include:

  • “The dog was being stubborn.”
  • “The dog felt guilty.”
  • “The dog wanted attention.”
  • “The dog was trying to dominate.”

These statements cannot be directly observed and should not be used as behavioural records.

Instead, practitioners should describe the behaviour itself and allow subsequent assessment to determine possible explanations.

Avoiding Anthropomorphism

Anthropomorphism involves attributing human characteristics, emotions or motivations to animals.

While empathy towards animals supports compassionate care, excessive anthropomorphism may reduce the accuracy of behavioural assessment.

For example:

Rather than writing:

“The dog became embarrassed.”

A clinician should record:

“The dog lowered its head, averted eye contact and moved behind the handler following the loud noise.”

The second description records observable behaviour while avoiding unsupported conclusions regarding emotional experience.

Behavioural science encourages practitioners to infer emotional states cautiously and only after considering behavioural, physiological and environmental evidence together.

Context is Essential

Behaviour cannot be interpreted without understanding the circumstances in which it occurs.

Important contextual factors include:

  • location
  • environmental conditions
  • presence of unfamiliar people or animals
  • recent activities
  • time of day
  • workload
  • health status
  • previous learning experiences
  • availability of reinforcement.

For example, panting immediately after exercise is expected, whereas excessive panting while resting in a cool environment may indicate pain, stress or illness.

Context transforms behavioural observations into clinically meaningful information.

Behavioural Observation Across Occupational Therapy Practice

Occupational Therapists may observe behaviour during:

  • initial assessments
  • intervention sessions
  • home visits
  • community participation
  • public access assessments
  • equipment trials
  • handler education
  • follow-up reviews.

Routine behavioural observation enables practitioners to identify changes that may influence occupational performance, handler safety or assistance animal welfare.

The Occupational Therapist’s Role

Occupational Therapists contribute to behavioural assessment by:

  • making systematic behavioural observations
  • recording behaviours objectively
  • recognising behavioural changes over time
  • identifying situations requiring further assessment
  • collaborating with veterinarians, trainers and behaviour professionals
  • incorporating behavioural observations into occupational therapy clinical reasoning.

Importantly, Occupational Therapists should recognise the limits of their professional scope. While they play an important role in behavioural observation and screening, diagnosis of behavioural disorders and development of specialist behaviour modification programs should be undertaken by appropriately qualified animal behaviour professionals.
