Learning is fundamental to the development of every assistance animal. From birth, animals continuously acquire information about their environment, forming associations that influence future behaviour. Whether learning to respond to cues, navigate complex public environments or perform specialised assistance tasks, learning occurs through predictable biological and psychological processes. Understanding these processes enables Occupational Therapists to appreciate how assistance animals acquire skills, adapt to change and maintain reliable performance throughout their working lives.

Learning theory refers to the scientific principles that explain how experience influences behaviour. Rather than viewing behaviour as fixed or solely instinctive, learning theory recognises that behaviour is dynamic and continually shaped by interactions between genetics, development, previous experiences and the environment. Modern learning theory forms the foundation of evidence-based animal training, behavioural rehabilitation and welfare-centred assistance animal practice.

Historically, animal training often relied upon punishment, dominance-based theories and assumptions regarding hierarchy within human–animal relationships. Contemporary behavioural science has largely rejected these approaches. Extensive research demonstrates that humane, reward-based training methods not only produce more reliable learning but also promote positive emotional wellbeing, strengthen the human–animal relationship and reduce the risk of fear, anxiety and behavioural deterioration.

For Occupational Therapists, understanding learning theory does not mean becoming an animal trainer. Rather, it enables practitioners to recognise how behaviour develops, appreciate factors that influence learning, support handlers in maintaining trained behaviours and collaborate effectively with accredited trainers and behaviour professionals. Learning theory also assists Occupational Therapists to recognise when behavioural difficulties may reflect communication problems, environmental influences, physical health concerns or inappropriate learning histories rather than deliberate non-compliance.

Importantly, learning occurs continuously. Animals learn not only during formal training sessions but also through everyday interactions with handlers, family members, members of the public and the wider environment. Every experience has the potential to strengthen, weaken or modify behaviour. Consequently, Occupational Therapists must consider how their own interactions, therapeutic activities and recommendations may influence both behaviour and welfare.

This chapter introduces the principles of learning theory underpinning assistance animal training. Students will explore different forms of learning, factors influencing learning, individual variation and the relationship between learning, welfare and occupational therapy practice.

What is Learning?

Learning is a relatively permanent change in behaviour or behavioural potential resulting from experience.

Learning allows animals to:

  • adapt to changing environments
  • predict future events
  • solve problems
  • avoid danger
  • locate resources
  • communicate effectively
  • develop social relationships
  • perform trained tasks.

Learning differs from instinctive behaviour. While instinctive behaviours are inherited through evolution, learned behaviours develop through experience and may change throughout an animal’s lifetime.

Most behaviours reflect an interaction between inherited predispositions and learned experiences.

Why Learning Matters for Assistance Animals

Assistance animals perform highly complex roles that require continuous learning throughout their lives.

Learning supports the development of:

  • task-specific skills
  • public access behaviours
  • social behaviours
  • emotional resilience
  • behavioural flexibility
  • environmental confidence
  • problem-solving abilities.

Learning also enables assistance animals to adapt to changes in:

  • household routines
  • occupational demands
  • public environments
  • handler abilities
  • ageing
  • health status.

Without ongoing learning, even well-trained behaviours may deteriorate over time.

How Animals Learn

Animals acquire information through multiple learning processes.

These include:

  • habituation
  • sensitisation
  • classical conditioning
  • operant conditioning
  • observational learning
  • social learning
  • trial-and-error learning.

These processes often occur simultaneously rather than independently.

Understanding the interaction between different learning mechanisms enables practitioners to interpret behaviour more accurately and appreciate why behavioural change sometimes occurs unexpectedly.

Factors Influencing Learning

Learning is influenced by numerous biological, psychological and environmental factors.

Biological Factors

These include:

  • species
  • breed
  • genetics
  • age
  • sensory abilities
  • physical health
  • pain
  • neurological function.

Emotional Factors

Learning is influenced by:

  • fear
  • anxiety
  • confidence
  • motivation
  • frustration
  • stress
  • emotional wellbeing.

Animals experiencing chronic stress or fear often demonstrate reduced learning capacity.

Environmental Factors

Learning is also affected by:

  • distractions
  • predictability
  • environmental complexity
  • safety
  • opportunities for practice
  • consistency of cues
  • reinforcement history.

Occupational Therapists should recognise that behaviour occurring within one environment may not automatically transfer to another.

Individual Differences in Learning

Like humans, animals vary considerably in how they learn.

Individual variation may reflect differences in:

  • temperament
  • motivation
  • previous experiences
  • cognitive ability
  • emotional resilience
  • breed characteristics
  • physical capability.

Consequently, assistance animal training should never adopt a “one-size-fits-all” approach.

Recognising individual differences supports both animal welfare and successful task acquisition.

Learning and Welfare

Learning and welfare are closely interconnected.

Positive learning experiences promote:

  • confidence
  • resilience
  • curiosity
  • engagement
  • positive human relationships
  • emotional wellbeing.

Conversely, learning environments characterised by fear, pain or excessive stress may impair learning while compromising welfare.

Animals learn most effectively when they:

  • feel safe
  • are physically comfortable
  • are appropriately motivated
  • experience clear communication
  • receive consistent feedback
  • are given opportunities for success.

Promoting positive emotional experiences during learning therefore benefits both behavioural outcomes and welfare.

The Occupational Therapist’s Role

Occupational Therapists contribute to successful learning by:

  • understanding the principles underpinning behaviour change
  • recognising factors that influence learning
  • reinforcing consistent routines
  • supporting generalisation of learned skills into everyday occupations
  • educating handlers regarding realistic expectations
  • adapting environments to facilitate learning
  • recognising when referral to qualified trainers or behaviour professionals is required.

Although Occupational Therapists do not typically deliver formal assistance animal training, an understanding of learning theory enhances interdisciplinary collaboration and supports evidence-based clinical reasoning.

Key Practice Principle

Learning is a lifelong process shaped by biology, experience, emotion and environment. Occupational Therapists who understand learning theory are better equipped to support assistance animal partnerships, recognise factors influencing behaviour and collaborate effectively with trainers and other professionals to promote ethical, evidence-based and welfare-centred practice.
