Assistance animals rely on optimal physical health to perform complex tasks safely, consistently and confidently. Pain, fatigue, disease or injury may reduce an animal’s willingness or ability to work, alter behavioural responses and increase stress. These changes not only affect the animal’s welfare but may also compromise the handler’s safety, independence and occupational engagement. A diabetes alert dog begins missing scent alerts that it had previously performed reliably. The handler is concerned that the dog has become distracted or requires additional training.

During observation, the Occupational Therapist notes reduced enthusiasm during work, slower movement and intermittent coughing. Rather than assuming a training issue, the Occupational Therapist recommends immediate veterinary assessment.
