Unit 2. Environmental Sustainability in the Assistance Animal Industry

Environmental sustainability is an increasingly important consideration across all industries, including the assistance animal sector. Assistance animal organisations and professionals have a responsibility to provide safe, ethical and effective services while also considering the environmental impacts associated with their operations.

Assistance animal practice involves the use of significant resources, including animal care products, equipment, facilities, cleaning supplies, transport, energy, water and administrative systems. Every stage of an assistance animal’s lifecycle—from selection and training through to retirement—creates opportunities to reduce environmental impact through thoughtful planning, responsible resource management and sustainable decision-making.

This unit explores the principles of environmental sustainability and their application within assistance animal workplaces. Learners will examine how sustainable practices can be incorporated into daily operations, including:
