Observation is one of the most important skills in assistance animal practice. Every behavioural assessment, welfare evaluation, training plan and clinical decision begins with careful observation of the animal. However, effective observation involves far more than simply watching what an animal does. It requires practitioners to collect objective, accurate and meaningful information while recognising the influence of context, environment, health and previous experiences on behaviour.

Animals communicate continuously through body language, posture, movement, facial expressions, vocalisations and interactions with their environment. These behavioural signals provide valuable information about an animal’s emotional state, physical health, motivation and welfare. Learning to recognise these signals enables Occupational Therapists to identify emerging welfare concerns, recognise behavioural changes and contribute effectively to interdisciplinary care.

A common challenge in behavioural observation is distinguishing objective observations from subjective interpretations. People naturally assign emotions, intentions or motivations to behaviour based on personal experiences, a process known as anthropomorphism. While empathy towards animals is valuable, assuming an animal is “being stubborn,” “feeling guilty” or “trying to be dominant” without objective evidence may lead to inaccurate conclusions and inappropriate interventions.

Contemporary behavioural science emphasises systematic observation using measurable, observable behaviours rather than assumptions about an animal’s intentions. The Purpose of Behavioural Observation

Behavioural observation allows practitioners to gather information that cannot be obtained through physical examination alone.

Observation may be used to:

  • recognise pain or illness
  • assess environmental suitability
  • identify stressors
  • evaluate interactions between handlers and animals.

Regular observation allows small behavioural changes to be recognised before they develop into more significant welfare or performance concerns.

Objective Versus Subjective Observation

Objective observation focuses on behaviours that can be directly seen or measured.

Examples include:

  • ears held backwards
  • tail tucked beneath body
  • pacing for five minutes
  • lip licking occurring repeatedly
  • refusing food
  • lying down after five minutes of work.

Subjective observations involve personal interpretations.

Examples include:

  • “The dog was being stubborn.”
  • “The dog felt guilty.”
  • “The dog was trying to manipulate the handler.”

Although subjective interpretations may appear reasonable, they cannot be objectively verified and should not replace careful behavioural description.

Clinical records should describe what occurred, not what the observer believes the animal was thinking.

Behaviour Does Not Occur in Isolation

Behaviour should always be interpreted within context.

Factors influencing behaviour include:

  • physical health
  • pain
  • fatigue
  • previous learning
  • emotional state
  • environment
  • social interactions
  • time of day
  • weather
  • workload
  • unfamiliar people or animals.

A behaviour observed in one setting may have a very different meaning in another.

For example, panting during exercise may be entirely normal, whereas excessive panting while resting in a cool environment may indicate pain, stress or illness.

Behavioural Observation Methods

Several structured observation methods are used in animal behaviour science.

Continuous Observation

Every behaviour is recorded throughout the observation period.

This method provides detailed information but can be time consuming.

Interval Recording

Behaviour is recorded at predetermined intervals.

This approach is useful for monitoring ongoing behaviours over extended periods.

Event Recording

Specific behaviours are counted whenever they occur.

Examples include:

  • barking
  • yawning
  • scratching
  • aggressive interactions
  • assistance task performance.

Duration Recording

The length of time a behaviour occurs is measured.

Examples include:

  • time spent resting
  • duration of play
  • duration of stereotypic behaviour
  • length of training sessions.

Selecting the appropriate observation method depends on the purpose of the assessment.

Recognising Behavioural Change

Changes in behaviour often provide the earliest indication of compromised welfare.

Potential indicators include changes in:

  • activity level
  • appetite
  • sleep
  • grooming
  • willingness to work
  • play behaviour
  • social interaction
  • vocalisation
  • response to familiar cues
  • interaction with handlers.

Behavioural changes should always be interpreted alongside physical health and environmental factors.

Communicating Behavioural Information

Behavioural observations should be communicated using clear, accurate and objective language.

Good documentation includes:

  • date and time
  • location
  • people present
  • environmental conditions
  • observable behaviours
  • duration
  • frequency
  • potential triggers
  • responses to intervention.

Objective documentation improves communication between Occupational Therapists, veterinarians, trainers and behaviour professionals.

Working Within Scope of Practice

Occupational Therapists are well placed to observe and document behaviour during therapy and community participation.

However, practitioners should recognise the limits of their expertise.

Occupational Therapists should refer when observations suggest:

  • persistent behavioural deterioration
  • aggression
  • severe fear or anxiety
  • repetitive or compulsive behaviours
  • suspected behavioural disorders
  • concerns requiring veterinary investigation.

Recognising when specialist assessment is required is an essential component of ethical practice.

The Occupational Therapist’s Role

Occupational Therapists use behavioural observation to support clinical reasoning, monitor welfare and facilitate occupational participation.

This includes:

  • observing behaviour during intervention

  • educating handlers about behavioural communication
  • recognising early indicators of compromised welfare
  • collaborating with interdisciplinary professionals.
