One of the central principles of behavioural assessment is that behaviour serves a function. Animals behave for reasons that are meaningful to them, even when those reasons are not immediately apparent to human observers. Behaviour may allow an animal to obtain a desired outcome, avoid an unpleasant situation, communicate discomfort, respond to fear or adapt to changes in the environment.   • nutrition
  • sleep and fatigue
  • emotional wellbeing
  • environmental conditions

Failure to consider these interacting factors may lead to inappropriate conclusions and ineffective interventions.

Medical and Welfare Considerations

Behavioural change should always prompt consideration of underlying medical conditions.

Pain, illness or neurological disease may alter behaviour long before obvious physical signs become apparent.

Potential contributors include:

  • musculoskeletal pain
  • gastrointestinal disease
  • endocrine disorders
  • sensory impairment
  • cognitive dysfunction
  • dermatological conditions
  • medication side effects.

Where medical causes cannot reasonably be excluded, referral to a veterinarian is essential before behavioural interventions are considered.

Applying Functional Behaviour Analysis

Functional Behaviour Analysis integrates behavioural observations with contextual information to identify likely influences on behaviour.

Occupational Therapists contribute valuable behavioural observations and clinical reasoning but should recognise the boundaries of their professional role.

They should:

  • collaborate with other professionals

Diagnosis of behavioural disorders and implementation of complex behaviour modification plans remain the responsibility of appropriately qualified veterinarians and animal behaviour professionals.
