Topic 2.2 Classical and Operant Conditioning

Classical and operant conditioning form the scientific foundation of modern animal training, behaviour modification and assistance animal education. These learning processes explain how animals develop associations between events, how behaviours increase or decrease over time and how environmental consequences shape future behaviour. Virtually every interaction between an assistance animal and its environment involves some form of conditioning, whether intentional or unintentional.

Understanding conditioning is essential for Occupational Therapists working alongside assistance animals. Although Occupational Therapists are not typically responsible for training assistance animals, they frequently reinforce behaviours during therapy, educate handlers, recommend environmental modifications and collaborate with trainers. Without an understanding of learning theory, practitioners may inadvertently strengthen undesirable behaviours or reduce the reliability of important assistance tasks.

Historically, animal training relied heavily on punishment, coercion and dominance-based theories that viewed animals as needing to submit to human authority. Contemporary behavioural science has largely rejected these approaches. Research demonstrates that animals learn most effectively when training is based on positive reinforcement, clear communication, predictable outcomes and environments that promote psychological safety. Humane training methods not only improve learning but also protect welfare, strengthen the human–animal relationship and reduce the risk of fear, anxiety and aggression.

Importantly, conditioning occurs continuously. Animals learn not only during structured training sessions but throughout everyday life. Every interaction has the potential to reinforce or weaken behaviour. A handler unknowingly rewarding attention-seeking behaviour, a member of the public encouraging jumping or an Occupational Therapist inadvertently reinforcing avoidance behaviours all contribute to the animal’s ongoing learning history.

For Occupational Therapists, understanding conditioning enhances clinical reasoning by explaining why behaviour changes occur, why behaviours sometimes persist despite training and how environmental consequences influence occupational performance. This knowledge also enables practitioners to communicate effectively with trainers, support consistent learning and recognise when behavioural concerns require specialist referral.

This chapter introduces the principles of classical and operant conditioning, examines reinforcement and punishment, and explores how evidence-based learning theory supports ethical, welfare-centred assistance animal practice.

Classical Conditioning

Classical conditioning, sometimes referred to as respondent conditioning or Pavlovian conditioning, occurs when an animal learns to associate one stimulus with another.

Through repeated pairings, a previously neutral stimulus comes to predict an important event and eventually produces a similar emotional or physiological response.

A familiar example is an assistance dog becoming excited when hearing the sound of its lead being picked up because the sound consistently predicts a walk.

Similarly, an animal may become anxious upon entering a veterinary clinic if previous visits were associated with painful procedures.

Classical conditioning primarily influences:

  • emotional responses
  • physiological responses
  • anticipatory behaviours
  • preferences
  • aversions.

Unlike operant conditioning, classical conditioning does not require the animal to perform a specific behaviour.

Applications of Classical Conditioning

Classical conditioning is used to create positive emotional associations.

Examples include:

  • pairing grooming with food rewards
  • introducing veterinary equipment gradually with positive experiences
  • associating mobility equipment with enjoyable activities
  • reducing fear of public environments
  • preparing assistance animals for novel situations.

Positive emotional associations improve learning, confidence and long-term welfare.

Operant Conditioning

Operant conditioning explains how consequences influence the likelihood that a behaviour will occur again.

When a behaviour produces a favourable outcome, it becomes more likely to occur in the future.

When a behaviour leads to an unfavourable outcome or no meaningful consequence, it may decrease over time.

Operant conditioning underpins virtually all assistance animal training.

Examples include:

  • retrieving medication
  • activating switches
  • opening doors
  • responding to mobility cues
  • interrupting repetitive behaviours
  • deep pressure therapy.

The Four Operant Consequences

Operant conditioning includes four possible consequences.

Positive Reinforcement

A desirable consequence is added following a behaviour, increasing the likelihood of that behaviour occurring again.

Examples include:

  • food rewards
  • praise
  • toys
  • play
  • access to preferred activities.

Positive reinforcement is considered the cornerstone of modern assistance animal training.

Negative Reinforcement

An unpleasant stimulus is removed when the desired behaviour occurs.

For example:

Pressure on a harness is released once the dog moves into the correct position.

Although negative reinforcement can increase behaviour, it relies upon the removal of discomfort and therefore requires careful ethical consideration.

It should not be confused with punishment.

Positive Punishment

An unpleasant consequence is added following a behaviour in an attempt to reduce its future occurrence.

Examples include:

  • leash corrections
  • verbal reprimands
  • physical corrections
  • electronic stimulation.

Although punishment may suppress behaviour temporarily, it carries significant welfare risks and does not teach the animal an alternative, appropriate behaviour.

Negative Punishment

A desirable consequence is removed following a behaviour.

Examples include:

  • ending play when rough behaviour occurs
  • removing attention following jumping
  • withholding access to a preferred activity.

When implemented appropriately and humanely, negative punishment may reduce undesirable behaviour while avoiding many of the welfare concerns associated with aversive methods.

Reinforcement Schedules

Behaviour is also influenced by how often reinforcement occurs.

Common reinforcement schedules include:

  • continuous reinforcement
  • fixed ratio schedules
  • variable ratio schedules
  • fixed interval schedules
  • variable interval schedules.

Early learning often benefits from continuous reinforcement, whereas well-established assistance tasks may become more reliable when reinforcement becomes less predictable.

Importantly, reducing reinforcement should never mean eliminating positive interactions. Assistance animals require ongoing reinforcement throughout their working lives.

Extinction

Extinction occurs when a previously reinforced behaviour no longer produces reinforcement.

Over time, the behaviour may decrease.

However, extinction is often accompanied by an extinction burst, where behaviour temporarily becomes more frequent or intense before declining.

For example, a dog that previously received attention for barking may initially bark louder or longer when attention is no longer provided.

Understanding extinction helps Occupational Therapists explain behavioural changes to handlers and avoid reinforcing behaviours unintentionally during extinction bursts.

Generalisation and Discrimination

Animals do not automatically perform learned behaviours in every situation.

Generalisation

Generalisation occurs when a learned behaviour transfers to new environments, people or situations.

For assistance animals, generalisation is essential because tasks must be performed reliably across diverse settings.

Discrimination

Discrimination involves responding only to specific cues or situations.

For example, an assistance dog learns to retrieve medication only when given a particular cue rather than retrieving objects indiscriminately.

Effective assistance animal training requires both generalisation and discrimination.

Why Positive Reinforcement is Best Practice

Current evidence consistently supports positive reinforcement as the preferred training approach because it:

  • promotes learning
  • improves welfare
  • strengthens the human–animal relationship
  • reduces fear and anxiety
  • encourages problem-solving
  • increases motivation
  • supports long-term behavioural reliability.

Positive reinforcement aligns with contemporary welfare science, One Welfare principles and the ethical responsibilities of Occupational Therapists.

The Occupational Therapist’s Role

Occupational Therapists should understand conditioning principles because they influence everyday clinical practice.

Practitioners contribute by:

  • reinforcing appropriate behaviours during intervention
  • educating handlers regarding consistency
  • recognising unintended reinforcement
  • supporting behaviour generalisation into everyday occupations
  • collaborating with accredited trainers
  • avoiding recommendations that compromise welfare.

Importantly, Occupational Therapists should not prescribe training techniques outside their professional competence but should possess sufficient knowledge to recognise evidence-based practice and make informed referrals.

Key Practice Principle

Every interaction teaches an animal something. Occupational Therapists who understand classical and operant conditioning can recognise how behaviour develops, avoid unintentionally reinforcing undesirable behaviours and support consistent, ethical and welfare-centred assistance animal practice through effective collaboration with handlers and animal professionals.
