While veterinary professionals direct medical treatment, occupational therapists working within the assistance animal industry should understand the recovery process to better support handlers, facilitate occupational participation and recognise when further veterinary review is required.

Recovery extends beyond physical healing. Animals may experience temporary or long-term changes in mobility, endurance, behaviour, confidence or task performance following illness or injury. Handlers may also require support to adapt daily routines, modify expectations and maintain participation in meaningful occupations while their assistance animal recovers. During this period, balancing the handler’s occupational needs with the animal’s welfare is essential.

This topic explores the principles of recovery following common illnesses, injuries and surgical procedures affecting assistance animals. Recovery Following Illness, Injury and Surgery

The period immediately following illness, injury or surgery is critical for achieving the best possible outcome for an assistance animal. Appropriate recovery allows damaged tissues to heal, reduces the likelihood of complications and supports a gradual return to normal function. Recovery is not simply a period of inactivity; rather, it is an active process involving careful monitoring, appropriate veterinary care, environmental management and progressive reintroduction of activity.

For assistance animals, successful recovery has implications beyond physical health. An assistance animal that returns to work before adequate healing has occurred may experience pain, reinjury or long-term impairment that compromises both welfare and working ability. Likewise, prolonged inactivity without appropriate management may contribute to muscle loss, reduced cardiovascular fitness, behavioural frustration or decreased confidence. Effective recovery therefore seeks to restore both physical function and overall wellbeing while protecting the long-term sustainability of the assistance animal partnership.

Recovery plans should always be individualised according to the animal’s species, breed, age, underlying health, temperament, occupation and the nature of the illness or injury. Veterinary recommendations form the foundation of all recovery planning. Occupational therapists should never prescribe veterinary treatments but should understand veterinary advice sufficiently to support the handler in implementing recommendations safely within daily routines and occupational contexts.

Factors Influencing Recovery

Recovery times vary considerably between animals and conditions. Numerous factors influence the rate and quality of healing, including:

  • Presence of chronic disease

Stress is another important consideration. Pain, changes to routine, restricted activity, unfamiliar environments and separation from handlers can all increase physiological stress responses, potentially slowing recovery and affecting behaviour. Maintaining predictable routines where possible and using low-stress handling techniques can support both physical and emotional recovery.

The Importance of Rest

Rest is a therapeutic intervention rather than simply the absence of activity. Many orthopaedic injuries, soft tissue injuries and surgical procedures require periods of restricted movement to allow tissues to heal appropriately. Excessive activity during early recovery may disrupt surgical repairs, reopen wounds, increase inflammation or cause permanent damage.

The degree of activity restriction depends on veterinary recommendations. Some animals require complete crate or stall rest for a period, while others benefit from carefully controlled leash walks or structured rehabilitation exercises. Handlers may find activity restriction challenging, particularly when their assistance animal is accustomed to an active working lifestyle. Occupational therapists can assist by helping handlers adapt daily routines while respecting veterinary restrictions.

Environmental management may include restricting access to stairs, slippery flooring, furniture or rough play with other animals. Non-slip flooring, supportive bedding and quiet recovery spaces may improve comfort and reduce injury risk.

Pain Management

Pain management is fundamental to recovery. Animals experiencing uncontrolled pain may eat less, sleep poorly, avoid movement and experience delayed healing. Chronic pain may also alter behaviour, reduce confidence and negatively affect future working performance.

Veterinary-prescribed analgesics should always be administered exactly as directed. Handlers should never adjust medication dosages or administer human pain medications unless specifically instructed by a veterinarian, as many human medications are toxic to animals.

Pain should be monitored throughout recovery. Behavioural indicators may include reduced activity, reluctance to move, altered posture, vocalisation, guarding of affected areas, changes in appetite, disrupted sleep, reduced interaction or changes in temperament. Occupational therapists should recognise these signs and encourage prompt veterinary review when pain appears poorly controlled.

Supporting the Handler During Recovery

When an assistance animal is temporarily unable to work, the handler’s independence, safety and occupational participation may also be affected. Everyday activities such as shopping, attending work or education, using public transport and accessing the community may become significantly more difficult.

Occupational therapists play an important role in supporting clients during this transition. Temporary strategies may include modifying occupations, identifying alternative supports, reducing environmental demands or implementing adaptive equipment until the assistance animal safely resumes work. Supporting realistic expectations is equally important, as many handlers experience anxiety, guilt or frustration while their assistance animal recovers.

Recovery should never be rushed because of occupational pressures. Protecting the long-term health and welfare of the assistance animal ultimately supports the sustainability of the partnership and reduces the likelihood of reinjury.

Recognising Recovery Complications

Most animals recover uneventfully when veterinary recommendations are followed. However, complications can occur and require prompt veterinary assessment.

Potential warning signs include persistent or worsening pain, swelling, wound discharge, bleeding, unpleasant odour, fever, reduced appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, difficulty breathing, collapse, neurological abnormalities or sudden deterioration in function. Similarly, any unexpected change in behaviour during recovery may indicate pain, infection or another underlying complication.

Occupational therapists should encourage handlers to contact their veterinarian promptly whenever recovery does not progress as expected. Early intervention often prevents minor concerns from developing into more serious complications.

Return to Work

Returning to work should be a gradual, carefully planned process based on veterinary guidance rather than arbitrary timeframes. Healing of skin does not necessarily indicate complete healing of deeper tissues, and apparent clinical improvement does not always mean an animal is physically ready to resume demanding assistance tasks.

Return-to-work plans should progressively increase physical and cognitive demands while monitoring the animal’s comfort, endurance, gait, behaviour and willingness to perform tasks. Some animals may initially return to limited duties before gradually resuming their full workload.

If signs of pain, fatigue, reluctance or reduced performance emerge, workload should be reduced and veterinary advice sought before continuing progression.

Occupational Therapy Considerations

Occupational therapists are not responsible for diagnosing or treating veterinary conditions; however, they play an important role in supporting safe recovery following illness, injury or surgery. This includes helping handlers understand veterinary recommendations, adapting occupations while the assistance animal recovers, monitoring functional impacts on the partnership and facilitating timely referral when concerns arise. By promoting collaborative, welfare-centred recovery planning, occupational therapists contribute to both the long-term health of the assistance animal and the continued participation, independence and wellbeing of the handler.
